VMware Releases Details of ESX 3.5 and Virtual Center 2.5
Virtualization Tuesday, October 09 2007In a press release yesterday, VMware released some details of upcoming features in it's 3.5 release of Virtual Infrastructure. A couple of these really stood out to me as big wins.
1. Storage VMotion - For someone who can't live without VMotion, I'm super excited to hear about this feature. If you are familiar with VMotion you know that to do a live migration today, you must have shared storage (such as a SAN), however with Storage VMotion you can hot migrate a machine from one host to another and from one storage resource to another. With NO downtime!!
2. Distributed Power Management - The datacenter goes green!! With the cost of power, cooling, and everything in between juice needed to run servers isn't going away anytime soon. However VMware aims to take another big stride in helping reduce this cost by introducing what it calls "Distributed Power Management". Distributed Power Management will automatically power off servers when loads are low and turn them back on when more horsepower is needed. Very Cool!!
